There are many amazing events that take place all over the world. Here are some things you can do and see in January:
Do you love oysters? This may just be the thing for you. On January 27, it will be time for the 30th annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. You may take part in the infamous oyster shucking and eating contest, or watch from the sidelines while enjoying live music.
If you are not an oyster fan then venture over to Christchurch in New Zealand where you can get ready to laugh and clap and may even get dragged onstage at the World Buskers Festival from January 17-27. This is New Zealand’s largest outdoor festival and brings together street performers from all over the world.
From January 12 to March 30 you may soak up a local tradition at Dunkirk Carnival in northern France. The event pays homage to the city’s fishing and maritime culture.
How about exploring California’s scenic and celebrated “Wine Road” at the Winter Wineland festival? This event runs from January 19-20 and you can get the opportunity to meet wine makers and taste limited production wines.
If wine tasting is not your thing, then kick off your shoes at the San Sebastian Street Festival from January 17-20. This takes place in Old San Juan and during the four day festival, revelers can experience different rides, food stalls and live music on the streets.
On January 21 this year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day coincides with Inauguration Day. Travel to Washington DC to see President Obama being sworn in for a second time on the Capitol lawn. After, head down to the MLK, Jr. Memorial to pay respects to one of the most influential civil rights leader of the 20th century.
Head over to Ireland for the Temple Bar Trad Fest from January 22-27. The festival which lasts six full days and nights and is spread all over Dublin, will see standard bearers like the Dubliners and Clannad as well as some of the most promising emerging talents on display.
For a taste of the Wild Wild West, head to the National Western Stock Show January 12-27 in Denver, Colorado. Now in its 107th year, it draws hundreds of thousands of cowpokes with its huge trade show, bull riding, horse contest and show jumping.
Ever dreamed of taking a ride by hot balloons? If that’s the case, then it’s time to go up, up and away at the 35th annual Hot Air Balloon Festival January 26-February 3 in Château-d’Œx, Switzerland. Scores of aerostats will navigate the skies against the idyllic alpine backdrop.
If the Caribbean is more your style then head to the 25th annual Taste of Cayman Food & Wine Festival on January 26 in George Town, the largest city in Grand Cayman. You will learn about the island rich and unique culture and history as you witness chefs prepare authentic Caymanian dishes and sample the results.
Ever dreamed of being a pirate even for a day? Start sharpening your “cutlass” mates and head over to Tampa, Florida on January 26 for the Gasparilla Pirate Fest. Be on hand to witness the José Gasparilla (“the world’s only fully-rigged pirate ship”) enter the city along Bayshore Boulevard in the Parade of Pirates. Afterwards let loose at the Pirate Fest Street Festival.
