Legendary singer Dionne Warwick has filed for bankruptcy. The singer owes nearly 7 million dollars to the IRS in back taxes from the years 1991 to 1999 and more than $3 million in business taxes is owed to the state of California where she currently resides.
According to Warwick’s publicist, poor money management is what led to the amounts now owed. She has allegedly paid the due amounts but has failed to pay the interest and penalties acquired over the years.
Documents filed in her home state of New Jersey earlier this month stated that Warwick maintains a monthly income of about $21,000 with a similar amount in monthly expenses. Her publicist stated that Warwick had, “repeatedly attempted to offer re-payment plans and proposals to the IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board for taxes owed”.
Warwick, who is now 72, has sold more than 100 million records since the 1960’s. She won her first of five Grammy awards in 1986 for “Do You Know The Way To San Jose?”
