It’s officially the middle of Awards Season™, and with the latest Grammy Awards announcement and Oscar nominations happening next week, things are about to kick into maximum overdrive. One awards event we are particularly fond of is the somewhat lesser known Costume Designers Guild Awards honoring costume excellence in both film and TV. For us, this is mayjah. We’re OBSESSED with costumes in an unhealthy way…like in a Krispy Kreme hamburgers kind of way. Yeah, it’s disgusting, and yet we’re so thrilled with this year’s nominees we don’t care if we’re covered in powder (wigs) or grease (Gosling) when the winners are announced on Feb. 21. Who wouldn’t want to cheer on Ry-Ry’s Drivejacket (we actually have a member of the staff who wears this satin juggernaut on a regular basis), the soiled bridal brilliance of Bridesmaids, or Rooney Mara‘s supremely badassish Lisbeth Salander costumes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Oh, and that’s only the beginning where this year’s costumes are concerned.
In the Excellence in Period Film category, we’re rooting for the Mia Wasikowska-starring film, Jane Eyre, which was all about dark and elaborate 18th century GOWNS topped off in killer lace overlay bonnets. We also loved all of the 1950s silhouettes in The Help. And then there’s Madonna‘s period film W.E., which is all about royal finery designed by her longtime stylist, Arianne Phillips.
In the TV categories, there are awards for Excellence in both Contemporary and Period/Fantasy Series. We think Ginnifer Goodwin‘s fantasy fairy-tale show, Once Upon a Time, has a good chance, especially with all of the elaborate Snow White costumes. Glee is also nominated, and we are particularly fond of any of the “show” dresses, such as the one, above, worn by Naya Rivera. (Note to Glee producers: more total BANANAS costumes whenever these kiddos sing on a stage, K?) Also rounding out the TV nominees is the new, mega popular show Revenge, which is set in the Hamptons and features runway-inspired looks in practically every episode.
