Have You Ever Been To Carriacou? ………One of The “Secret” Islands Of The Caribbean.

The island of Carriacou is located 850 miles-12.5° north of the equator, 23 miles north of Grenada and about 90 miles north of Venezuela. It is also the southernmost of the Grenadines. It is in a group of nearly 200 islands some only the size of tennis court between the islands of St. Vincent and Grenada.

Although some of Carriacou sister islands namely, (Bequia, Palm Island, Mustique, and PSV), earned tony reputations as playground for the jet-setting crew, Carriacou has been and remains a quiet less touristy type of island for those who truly want to get away from it all.

You will not find any casinos, discos, five star restaurants or boutiques on Carriacou. What you will find though are superb beaches, beautiful views and great places to hike to. For those wishing to explore the waters surrounding the islands, there are many breath taking reefs that you can explore.

The island of Carriacou as the name suggests is the Amerindian word for “land of reefs”. This island attracts divers from all around the world. One key attraction for divers is an active underwater volcano. With many picture perfect beaches to choose from you may spend your days just lazing on a beach doing nothing at all. One of the beaches Sand Island was highlighted on the cover of Germany’s prestigious GEO magazine and rated as “one of ten best places in the Caribbean.”

One of the best things about Carriacou is that you can visit the island anytime. Temperatures remain the same throughout the year. There are two distinct seasons the “dry season” from December 15 to May 15, and a rainy season from “June 1 to November 30.”

It is not a part of the ABC islands although often confused with Curacao. Carriacou is part of the island of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique. The island is the size of Key West or Manhattan with just about 5000 inhabitants.

You can get to Carriacou by flying to the island of Grenada. You will then be transported by high-speed ferry to Carriacou or you may opt to fly from Grenada to Carriacou.

When next you plan an island getaway to the Caribbean consider visiting this beautiful laid back island if you seek total relaxation and peace.
