Holness touches down in Rio… Smith in charge of Gov’t

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness is now in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to support the nation’s athletes in the Olympics.

Holness posted a short video of himself being escorted to a vehicle after arriving in the city.

“I am here in Rio to support our athletes on their bid to bring home medals for Jamaica,” Holness said.

Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, Derrick Smith, is in charge of the Government in the absence of Holness.

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) advised that Holness left the island on Thursday for Brazil.

The PM is scheduled to return to the island next Tuesday, August 16.

The release from the OPM said Holness intends to bring the good wishes of the nation directly to the athletes.

The prime minister’s visit will coincide with the finals of the sprint events of the Olympics.

Among the track events he is expected to witness on the weekend are Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’ historic bids to become the first man and woman to win three consecutive 100-metre Olympic gold medals.
