Based in Jamaica, J Wray and Nephew is owned by international spirits and beverage player Gruppo Campari. The new partnership with Carib Brewery Limited, the company said, is in keeping with its mandate to focus on its core business, alcohol beverages.
Earlier this year, the firm finalized negotiations to divest its non-spirits assets and distribution agreements.
J Wray and Nephew Ltd’s Managing Director, Clement “Jimmy” Lawrence, further explained the reason for entering the beer market.
“Our top Jamaican and International brands are performing exceptionally well in the region. It is therefore fitting that, as a regional player in the Spirits and Beverage industry, we distribute regional brands, and as such, strategically, we saw the need to round out our portfolio to include beer. We chose Stag because it is a well-known brand of beer, having established a solid foothold in the Eastern Caribbean. Stag is a timely addition to our strong portfolio,” Lawrence said.
Stag is brewed by Carib Brewery Limited and has a strong regional presence in countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Barbados, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname.
Marketing Director for J Wray & Nephew Ltd, Gary Dixon said: “Jamaicans enjoy having a wide-range of alcoholic beverages to choose from, so it was important for us to not only add a beer to our portfolio, but one of regional recognition such as Stag. While Jamaica is known for our award winning rums, beer is also an option for our consumers and Stag provides a great addition to wholesale and retail outlets and will soon be a standout in entertainment and eatery hotspots island-wide.”
Stag’s alcohol by volume percentage stands at 5.5 per cent and it is known for its crisp flavour and clean finish, with minimal aftertaste.
J Wray and Nephew Ltd has already begun distribution of Stag which will be available island-wide by July 2015. The suggested bar price for Stag is $200.
