With a spirit and a smile that lights up an entire room, Chevaughn Clayton is one of those noteworthy singers you know is going places, and bringing Divine Spirit and a strong message of Love with him. Currently fronting the Kingston-based band C-Sharp, Chevaughn is a mainstay in the Jamaican music scene, and a definite up-and-comer to be watched internationally. Having worked extensively with influential artists Queen Ifrica, Wayne Marshall, Tony Rebel, Etana and Cherine Anderson, Chevaughn's latest projects include a collabo with Elephant Man called "Happy", and a track featuring DingDong, Voicemail and Chris Martin titled "Tables". C-Sharp is no stranger to producing hits as their single "No More" topped the JA charts in 2007, and Chevaughn's newest creations will hopefully follow suit.

This young man is one we definitely want to keep our eyes and ears tuned into, as his mission to spread Love via music has only just begun. Born and raised in the parish of St. Catherine, Chevaughn graduated from the famed school for pumping out massive musical talent, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, in Kingston, JA. Since then, he's slowly becoming an expert at uplifting crowds nationwide with his on stage brilliance, while continuing to extend his talents into writing, producing and back-up singing. A natural genius and drive Chevaughn truly embodies are sure to give yet more props to Jamaica for producing some of the most gifted musicians in the industry today.

Jamrock recently caught up with Chevaughn so he could give us a little insight into where he's at with his life and work, and what to be on the look out for musically. Check out the interview below to see what Mr.Clayton looks for in lady and what his musical choice is when not creating his own...




Alright Chevaughn, thanks for taking the time to chat with Jamrock! Tell us a little bit about your new single "Tables" - Who produced and wrote it?

 "Tables" is a Notice Production (Notice is Wayne "Unga" Thompson, Jason Welsh, LLamar Brown and Andrae Carter. Gregory Morris is the team's engineer.)
Well, one day we were sitting down talking about a girl named "Rea" and her lies and how this dude was so in love, it took him a while to realize it.  At the end of the chat, Notice played a track for me, and trust me when I say, the chorus came the same time. Then I brought it to Craig Jackson and Chris Martin one day and we started writing. We recorded our parts that same week, then we played it for Ding Dong and there you have it..."Tables".



So as front man for the JA-based pop group C-Sharp, tell us what's up with the group now?

We are currently working on our second album. So we been in the studio a lot just writing and creating that good music. (smile) The group still consists of me, Dawin "Wiya Campbell, Aeion "Yaaka" Hoilett, Lamont "Monty" Savory and Randevon Patrick.


What's 2010 look like for C-Sharp?

Good things we hope. Tours and lots of performances, and just more people being introduced to our sound and message. People know us a lot in Europe and Africa, we're actually pretty big. Now it's just having patience for when Canada and the US catch on to our sound. We actually visited Canada this year, and we did Ragga Muffin Festival this past February in Long Beach, California. So things are happening.


For Chevaughn as a solo artist, where would you like to be positioned in the coming year?

Well, in all honesty, I not pursuing a solo career. I am still Chevaughn, the lead vocalist in the band C-Sharp, I am just doing music right now. No wire fences...no brown paper boxes either. You get me?

Sure, letting what's meant to happen, happen in it's own time. How about where you'd like to be physically, emotionally and spiritually?

I hope by next year I am a stronger vocalist in technique and in presence. With God's will and zeal within me, I hope to be emotionally stable enough to give the messages that God gives me to spread to the world thru melodies and lyrics. Gaining at least one more soul to divine peace and unconditional love really.


Those are some divine intentions! We feel that. So for you, 2010 Future plans/ tours?

Short term plan is greater publicity for sure. I am working daily in studio and out in the streets to make sure that all the songs get recognized and loved, so that we can get offers for tours, album deals and endorsements, not just for 2010, but for much longer.


Ok, lets get some juices flowing. How's the Love life- What gets Chevaughn in a lady?

I love Love...I think I am so hard to please though. A lady must be sure of herself and what she wants in life. Not arrogant, but confident. She must also know how to serve and give of herself to others without being asked always...kind-hearted. I love to close my eyes and see everything happening effortlessly around me, so she gotta be a sensitive soul, ready to connect.


Deep Chevaughn..Thank you! (laughs)..Tell us, growing up in Jamaica,  how has it shaped you musically?

Greatly. I remember going to primary school and I would have about ten things listed that I learnt for each day and that helped me open my eyes to the true beauty and warmth of the average Jamaican person. My daily interaction with these souls give me inspirations beyond my explanations.


Who were your major musical influences growing up?

My family a whole lot. My sister Kethrina was my first vocal coach. Fred Hammond, Sam Cooke, Peter Tosh and Lauryn Hill. Now? Donny Hathaway, Beres Hammond, Donnie McLurkin, Dave Matthews Band, The Wailers and all my friends and co-workers.


What happens to you if don't sing / write?

I feel as though I don't exist. As if I am not living out my true potential and purpose. 


I hear you. Without our purpose and love, life becomes meaningless. Any upcoming collaborations?

Got one out now with Elephant Man called "Happy". And C-Sharp has two we working on with Queen Ifrica and Demarco.


If you could work with any artists, who'd be your top three picks?

Ahhhh....Donny Hathaway, Anita Baker and Billy Ocean.


What's heavy play on your ipod right now?

Don't have an ipod actually. But my CD player has Mika in it now. (laughs)



Jam travel: On your many travels thus far, where else in the world would you love to live or visit often?

I've never been to Australia so I really would love to go. I love Germany a lot, and I love performing in Nairobi, Kenya. So yeah...(laughs).


Jam style: What designers are you coveting right now? Any pieces in your wardrobe you can't live without? Favorite sneaker?

Designers would be Les Campbell and Dexter "Spokes" Huxtable. I can't live without my berets. And my favorite sneaker is my brand new plaid All Star Converse.
