Eleventh hour TV watchers got a real treat last night (and the Internets did this morning), when Kanye West reached deep into his catalogue for his set on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
Yeezy stopped by the popular talk show Tuesday (Feb. 25) to perform what turned out to be a mini-concert, a set that included “Jesus Walks,” “Touch the Sky,” “Stronger,” “Heartless,” “All of the Lights,” “Mercy” and “Black Skinhead.” He also sat down with Meyers — in one of his most relaxed convos yet — to explain why he wears a Margiela mask on stage, why he keeps calling himself Michaelangelo and how baby Nori is affecting his work.
The mask “is freeing” he said of the accessory that he dons for his Yeezus tour. “[Behind it is] a place where you can express yourself to your audience — to everyone — without being judged, without having to live up to whatever your name is supposed to represent.” He said he wants to”feel like a new artist again.”
‘Ye’s been frustrated that the fashion world is not seeing past his musical persona. He explained that the reason he’s so adept as a producer is because he has a neurological phenomenon. “I give you sonic paintings,” he said. “I have synesthesia. I can see sounds.” But, it stunts his ability to be received as a designer, he said. “When I do fashion, I just want to give you sculptures, so it’s like Michaelangelo — the church wanted him to paint and he wanted to do sculptures.”
He promises he’s not waiting for the world to get him, though. He said he’s been in the studio, the first time since he became a first-time father, and he’s not planning to censor his music for his daughter North West. Rather, he will bring her up to understand his context. “It’s all in the way you’re raised and have an understanding and appreciation for what you’re looking at and what you’re hearing and why you’re hearing it. If you think about the Yeezus album, cursing was definitely necessary. If you sat down and talked to Quentin Tarantino and are like, ‘Are you gonna make G-rated movies?’ It’s like, it’s Quentin Tarantino.”
Kanye West was the first big name musical guest Meyers, who debuted as the show’s host this week, has had on Late Night.
