In a new presidential campaign fund-raising initiative, entitled, Runway to Win, 22 designers including: Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Rachel Roy and Tracy Reese – will create merchandise whose proceeds will go towards Barack Obama’s reelection campaign efforts. The designs are said to include t-shirts, tote bags, scarves, and wristlets.
Vogue Magazine was instrumental in compiling the list of participating designers, especially since Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour has been an unapologetically public supporter of Obama. Anna is said to be apart of an elite group of supporters who have raised over $500,000 for the 2012 campaign. And she will also be co-hosting the Runway to Win fundraiser in New York this February, alongside actress Scarlett Johansson.
Although neither Anna or the Obama campaign wanted to comment aboutRunway to Win, it won’t be too difficult to predict their plans since it’s modeled on Obama’s 2008 fashion campaign initiative, which was appropriately titled “Runway to Change.” Not all participating ’08 designers are back on board for 2012, and LVMH, who has significant ownership in design houses like Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan, was afraid of publicly backing Barack for fear of alienating their brands from Republican Voters.
LVMH’s concerns are valid, since politics is an especially polarizing topic. Fortunately, enough brave designers have signed-on to fashion themselves a flag to visibly wave in support of Obama. And if they have their way, a Democratic win in the 2012 presidential elections is already sewn, sealed, and delivered.
