Xena: Warrior Princess remake is in the works with NBC

NBC and NBC Universal International are prepping a reboot of the hit show that originally started off as a Hercules spinoff.

The adventure- drama is in early development stages but with the aim of a 2016 release. A search for a writer is currently ongoing.

Original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are also involved in the project, which is considered to be a “modern reboot.”

No word yet on what role, if any, original star, Lucy Lawless will have. Insiders have indicated, however, that they would like the actress to have a role both onscreen and behind the scenes.

Sources close to the project say that the new Xena would “have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games’ Katniss”; producers have said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart heroine for the modern generation.

Xena: Warrior Princess ran from 1995 to 2001 and centred on her quest for redemption for redemption along with her companion Gabrielle (played by Renee O’Connor). The series developed a cult following and was ranked as one of the top five syndicated shows in each of its six seasons.
